I’m a frequent traveler, but my Japan Visa for a 15-day trip (October 2-17, 2024) got denied. As someone with a solid travel history, including a Schengen Visa, I was shocked! Here’s what happened and what I learned along the way.
My Japan Visa Application Experience
So, I recently applied for a Japan Visa for a 15-day trip (October 2-17, 2024). It’s my first time visiting Japan, and like most of you, I was super excited. The requirements looked straightforward on the website, especially since I have a solid travel history, including a Schengen Visa.
I initially applied through Discovery Tours in Mandaue, Cebu. The staffs were friendly and advised me to apply for a multiple-entry visa. I was hesitant but followed their suggestion. They assured me that even if the multiple-entry wasn’t granted, I’d still receive a single-entry visa. Some documents I prepared, like my cover letter and flight details, were even returned because they weren’t needed.
After waiting for 10 working days, I finally got a call. I was excited, but when I arrived, the news was disappointing—I was not granted a visa. No reason was provided, and I was told I apply again after six months. It was frustrating because I had more than enough funds and met all the stated requirements. I even regretted taking their advice to apply for a multiple-entry visa.
Filing an Appeal
Still, I didn’t give up. I contacted Friendship Tours, another agency in Mandaue. They were more professional and suggested I file an appeal. This time, I had my boyfriend act as my guarantor and submitted additional documents like a sponsorship letter, proof of our relationship, and my property ownership. I kept it simple and applied for a single-entry visa.
Unfortunately, my appeal was terminated. While not outright rejected, I was told I could reapply after six months.
Key Takeaways for Your Japan Visa Application:
- Do thorough research. Agencies handle applications, but they might not offer the best advice.
- Consider applying for a single-entry visa if it’s your first time visiting Japan.
- Choose an agency with good reviews and customer feedback before committing.
- A guarantor can strengthen your application, but it’s not always necessary if your financial standing is strong.
- Hold off on booking flights and accommodations until your visa is approved—or book refundable options.
- Don’t announce your trip too soon to avoid having to explain if things don’t go as planned.
I’ve moved on and will try again next year! I hope this post helps anyone going through the same process. Stay positive and be prepared. ✨
Stay tuned for my next attempt! 😄
